My Father and My Son / Babam ve Oğlum

This is a 2005 Turkish production movie. Its scriptwriter and director is Çağan Irmak. The movie is about background events of Turkey in the times of coup. It treats the reflection of the coup to a family, lack of communication between afather and a son before the coup and wounds made by this.
Sadık leaves his father's farm and goes to university. He gets involved in political events. He gets married and his wife gives childbirth at the times of coup in Turkey (September 12,1980 Turkish Coup d'état). His wife dies in childbirth and Sadık's life turns upside down. He gets tortured for years.
After a couple years, he returns his father's farm with his son, Deniz. The reason for his return is that Sadık has a terminal disease and he wants to leave his son with his family.
I want to state that this movie is very important for Turkey for some reasons. First of all, in the times of the coup, a lot of people and families affected badly in Turkey. Secondly, in this movie, it is shown that there's a conflict and unfinished things between a father who wants to leave his job to his son and a son who has his own dreams. This is a worldwide problem. Thirdly, This movie takes place in Agean region and people talks in local dialect. This helps you to see the Agean culture. And the last one, like Victor Hugo said in Les Miserables, "There could be fathers who do not love their sons but there could not be grandfathers who do not love their grandsons madly." in this movie there is an example for this. There is a grandfather whose heart sinks for his grandson. But there is a differance, this grandfather loves his son very very much but his stubbornness and lack of communication prevent him showing his love. What do you think about how this story ends?

If you want to believe in happy endings, I reccomend you to lend and ear to the dreams of little Deniz whose all job is reading books.

After watching these movie, I am sure that you will get the desire of calling the ones you love and you will give them a big hug. And this is the director's purpose of produce this movie. :)

Spoilersss!

A few negative things about the movie, you can have a little hard times understanding the movie beacuse of the local dialect and it is based on Turkey's family relations and history. The comedy factor in the movie is based on the local dialect. So, Will there be an unhappy ending? No. ' Do you believe in believing? Believing in dreams?' The movie says that while you are growing up, does your dreams get small? What is your answer? Do you ever think what is the meaning of having somewhere you belong, a home? Do you ever think that when you leave somewhere but your heart stays behind? An unfinished love? Sadık comes back to face the things he could not make with his father and the things he had in his heart. With his Deniz. Father and son, grandfather and grandson, mother and son, big brother and brother. This film has everything about love. You should watch it if you want to see a lot of love and if you want to feel this.

"Do a person's dreams get smaller while he is growing up?"
"-We are happy.  aren't we Sadık?
- Of course we are happy, brother."

"Do you know the feeling that not being able to see a child's growing, father?"
" There are a lot of things that I want to tell him. You tell him, father."

"Give him a room, father. His home, which he can sometimes go away."
